Submersible water pumps

Water feature

Unless you plan to have an extremely large waterfall or stream, use a submersible pump. Residential water features usually employ submersible pumps of less than 4,000 gph. They provide noiseless operation and ease of setup, giving them a distinct advantage over non submersible pumps. Submersible pumps usually feature a screen intake that protects them from clogging. Some models include a build in filter and work well for most small fountains, waterfalls, and screams.

Buy the highest quality pump that you can afford. Bronze, brass, and stainless steel models are top of the line and well withstand heavy use over the years. Cast iron and aluminum pumps offer moderate prices and quality compared to the least expensive plastic models. Select a pump with a cord that’s long enough to reach the nearest ground fault circuit interrupter GFCI electrical outlet. If the outlet lacks GFCI protection, use an outdoor extension cord that has a build in GFCI.

Place a submersible pump on a platform of bricks or flat rocks a few inches above the pond bottom. This keeps the pump above sediment that accumulates on the pool floor and makes it easier to clean the pump. Choose from oil filled or magnetically driven submersible pumps. The latter have a longer life than oil filled pumps and consume substantially less energy per gph than other pumps. Oil filled pumps are normally required for high head requirements. Beware of the potential of contamination leaks from oil filled pumps. Avoid low priced residential sump pumps, even though they have an attractive gph rating. They typically burn out under continuous operation within a few months.

Non submersible water pumps

water feature

Use non submersible pumps for large water features using over 12,000 gph or high output situations, such as waterfall, requiring a high lift. Compared to submersible pumps, external models make more noise and cost more to operate but they’re easier to access for maintenance and cost less. A complex plumbing installation may require a professional’s assistance. These units must be kept dry and well ventilated within a protective housing. Be sure to screen the intake to prevent clogging. Other necessities include locating the pump where water flows to it via gravity, or installing a check valve, then priming the pump. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for installing and operating your pump.
