Installing a preformed pond liner

Preformed pond liner

1. After the excavation your preformed pond liner must have firm support under the shelves, bottom, and sides in order to be stable and resist bucking. The depth should match the depth of the pond form plus 2 inches. If the pond includes shelves, measure carefully to make the excavation conform to their depth and width. The shelves need to be supported by soil in order to sustain the weight of water when the pond is filled.

2. Leave room to add 2 inches of damp sand under the shelves once the excavation is complete. Damp sand stays in place, whereas dry sand tends to shift off the edges of shelf area during installation.

3. If you want the top of the liner to be 1 inch above ground level to protect the pond liner from surface runoff, then measure and dig out only 1 inch extra, the 2 inches of sand will put the pond liner top 1 inch above ground level.

4. As the first few gallons of water spread evenly across the bottom of the liner it’s likely that the form will sit level in the ground, but the weight of added water might cause a slight shift. As the pond fills backfill around the form. Adjust the water flow so that the pond fills to roughly the same level at which you are working the soil on the outside of the liner.

5. Periodically check the level in all directions three or more times while filling the pond. If it’s out of level by more than ¼ inch, remove the water and sand, make adjustments and start over.
