 Installing a flexible pond liner

Flexible pond liner installation

1. First outline the ponds shape on the planned site. Use a garden hose or rope to outline a naturalistic, informal shape. Next you will be excavating where your pond will go either digging by hand or by renting a backhoe.

2. Lay a protective2 inch base of damp sand on the bottom of the pond. Use the sand base to fine tune the gentle bottom slope. On the sidewalls, install an underlayment of geo textile fabric, newspaper, or old carpet. Upon completing the installation of the protective underlayment, recheck the measurements of the excavation using a flexible measuring tap.

3. With assistance, if needed carry the pond liner into the excavation. Dragging could harm it and  might pull damaging objects on top of the protective underlayment. Cold liners, especially those made of PVC may require several hours in the sun to become pliable.

4. Starting at the center of the pond, unfold the liner outward toward the sides. Center the pond liner over the excavation. The pond liner will bunch up at curves and corners, folds are an inevitable result of forming a two dimensional piece of material into a three dimensional shape. Create a few large folds in order to eliminate most of the smaller ones. Let one person pull the pond liner from the top edge while another person works inside the excavation, making adjustments and ensuring that the pond liner remains center in the excavation. Place smooth stones or bricks on the perimeter of the liner to prevent it from blowing into the pond.

5. Informal pools will have random folds along the sides. Rectangular formal pools should have one large fold at each corner. Form each fold as a large triangle, secure it with double sided seaming tape. Allow the seaming tape to cure for 24 hours before adding water. Sealing the fold not only makes it less obvious, but it also keeps out debris and prevents small fish from becoming trapped.

6. When ready fill the pond with 2 inches of water before making final adjustments to the pond liner by smoothing out some of the wrinkles. Now you are ready to finish filling the water into the pond liner.
